The Mahón Port was then a naval base in the Mediterranean in the XVIII century. The British presence imposed the island's economy, for which Mahón turned into a commercial center and a place to smuggle goods. The British influence can be noticed in the local architecture.

Maó or Mahón is the business and commerce center of the island. Here we can find the Consell Insular, the main hospital, the port and the airport. The historical downtown offers nice walks and the most lively points of the port where we will find an abundant offer of entertainment and shopping. The biggest interest points of downtown are located between the Sa Esplanada plaza and the imponent port, when seen, we can understand its importance in the past.

Captured by the British in 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession and officially ceded as a result of the Treaty of Utrecht, it ended up a British dependency for 70 years. The Mahón Port was then a naval base in the Mediterranean in the XVIII century. The British presence imposed the island's economy, for which Mahón turned into a commercial center and a place to smuggle goods. The British influence can be noticed in the local architecture.

This is why Maó has its own personality, halfway between austerity and the simplicity of its medieval legacy and a peculiar colonial style, all of it flavored with a Mediterranean accent.
